Matchsticks

Towering pines rock in time
while the wind offshore plunders
the ocean of its treasures hidden
throwing lost souls and ships about

And with a waving treetop tall
the roots far below stretching
loosening dirt with restless tendrils
itching to break free, take first steps

With zephyrs’ crescendo to gale
the green things come alive
marionettes of Zeus, his toys
to march upon the land this night

True beasts of nature, kings of creation
outliving our measly human stays
we are but soft flesh and brittle bones
naught but expendable forms

Bowing to the power beyond ours
merciless random catastrophe
but beautiful in its destruction
the uprooting of all we know

of all we fear
of all we trust

torn from land’s grip
tossed like matchsticks
to remind us

how small
we are,

how small
we are.

    1. Thanks, Meg! 😊 Yes, stocked up and waiting for today’s wind to hit soon, but it’s tomorrow’s they are calling “historic” before it’s even happened so…thinking about staying in the basement for that one. I’ll try to update when I can. May lose power. Ironically, the internet guy is coming to install today. Ha!

    1. Thanks, E. I’m glad you liked it. 😊 Today’s winds are arriving later than expected, will show up soon then subside by dinner time. But it’s tomorrow’s historical wind storm they are predicting that is supposed to be worse than expected. I’m all stocked up, just trying to decide whether to sleep in basement or not πŸ™πŸΌπŸ’œ

      2. Thanks, Eric πŸ™πŸΌπŸ˜Š Yes, basements can be a blessing or a curse depending. Tornadoes reported in Oregon today. Send positive energy from 4-10pm tomorrow…that’s when the big storm is due to peak. πŸ’œ Love you back
