These Cold Rings

Two cold metal rings
sworn and worn
heat now gone
dissipated hearts
heat left, pulses part
time told tough tales
of a love that
wasn’t
ever truly there

imagined in vows
spoken in foiled faith
left the unforgiving altar
leaps of hope half-baked

promises of love forever
flew, like birds on the wind

gone

now days go by in motion
automatic institution
hello, goodbye, goodnight
a curt glance, a courtesy
so much for sex tonight

cold skin turns away
seeking sanctuary
elsewhere, alone

this cold love
these cold rings

to ice,

freeze

veins.
