December Still Life

the cry of a single Japanese violin
moves the water’s reeds, mirrored art
framed by earth and sky, December still life

mohawked ducks dip under, up to fluff slicked plumes
where water meets winding shore,
the leaves build up like autumn’s necklace

lining earth’s eye with dead spring’s color
ruby, garnet, topaz, emerald, but no diamond
tourmaline, citrine, but no sapphire

glass wind chimes tell this tale in random tones
but even random tones have mathematical origins
universe plays mind games and designs happenstance

the eagle and the heron take turns posing for pictures
while the cherry trees sleep for the winter
and the cry of the violin now rolls through chilled grass
