One More Light

“One More Light” ~ Linkin Park
Should’ve stayed, were there signs, I ignored?
Can I help you, not to hurt, anymore?
We saw brilliance, when the world, was asleep
There are things that we can have, but can’t keep

If they say
Who cares if one more light goes out?
In a sky of a million stars
It flickers, flickers
Who cares when someone’s time runs out?
If a moment is all we are
We’re quicker, quicker
Who cares if one more light goes out?

Well I do

The reminders pull the floor from your feet
In the kitchen, one more chair than you need oh
And you’re angry, and you should be, it’s not fair
Just ’cause you can’t see it, doesn’t mean it, isn’t there

If they say
Who cares if one more light goes out?
In a sky of a million stars
It flickers, flickers
Who cares when someone’s time runs out?
If a moment is all we are
We’re quicker, quicker
Who cares if one more light goes out?

Well I do

Who cares if one more light goes out?
In a sky of a million stars
It flickers, flickers
Who cares when someone’s time runs out?
If a moment is all we are
We’re quicker, quicker
Who cares if one more light goes out?
Well I do

Well I do

This is for Chester. Chester Bennington of Linkin Park took his own life last Thursday what would have been Chris Cornell’s 53rd birthday. He had been devastated by the loss of Chris, a close friend of his. He was godfather to Chris Jr. and sang Hallelujah at Chris Cornell’s funeral.

It’s tragic beyond words. Chester had a wife and six children. He had battled so much trauma in his life and LP was just putting out their latest record from where this amazing song comes.  I get the impression that Chris’ death was what tipped his scales. He said he couldn’t imagine a life without him.

I don’t know what the answer is…I  just know we need to do what we can to reach out to those who are in the dark and struggling.  If you or someone you know is depressed and possibly having thoughts of self harm or suicide, please don’t hesitate to contact the National Suicide Prevention Hotline, confidential and 24/7 at 1-800-273-8255 or suicidepreventionlifeline.org

Edge of Town

Really love this song. A great one to sing, and works well on my harmonium.

I discovered my new favorite place. In Seattle, our local kickass radio station is KEXP. You can listen to them online, they play everything I love and more…huge variety.

They moved last year to an awesome new location by the Seattle Center, with a gathering space with lounge couches and chairs, an excellent cafe, and a DJ booth that faces the main area so you can see them dj’ing live as they pipe the station into the room. To my surprise, they also have live in-studio performances by bands as they come through town for concerts. I’m going to be spending a lot of time there, I do believe.

So this week, I got to see the new (at least in US) band from Australia called Middle Kids, who just released their first EP last Friday, 6 killer songs. New fan. This is their song “Edge of Town.”

Hello My Old Heart

It’s been a while. I haven’t felt much like singing these last few months, physically or emotionally. People who have followed this page in that time may not be aware of this side of me. Well, here it is. If you like it, you can find more under “harmonium” in my page’s category drop down box.

Goodnight, friends.

Love always, Em

“Hello My Old Heart” ~ The Oh Hellos

Hello my old heart
How have you been
Are you still there inside my chest?
I’ve been so worried
You’ve been so still
Barely beating at all

Oh, don’t leave me here alone
Don’t tell me that we’ve grown
For having loved a little while
Oh, I don’t want to be alone
I want to find a home
And I want to share it with you

Hello my old heart
It’s been so long
Since I’ve given you away
And every day I add another stone
To the walls I built around you
To keep you safe

Hello my old heart
How have you been?
How is it, being locked away?
Well don’t you worry
In there, you’re safe
And it’s true, you’ll never beat
But you’ll never break

Nothing lasts forever
Some things aren’t meant to be
But you’ll never find the answer
Until you set your old heart free

Until you set your old heart free

I Could Be Nothing

Damn. This is what the harmonium excels at. This kind of song. Dark, brooding beauty. Put in your earphones and let this song with only 3 chords enchant you.

I feel like finding a banjo player and busking at Pike Place Market…

Hope you enjoy.

I Could Be Nothing ~ Great Lake Swimmers

It goes on forever along the shoreline
It never will end on the shores of my mind
I travel along ’til the sleep takes me in
Where have I ended, where do I begin?

Sand blankets are littered with stones whipped across
Dead things in the water, forgotten or lost
The branches have surfaced and now they are lean
The trees have washed up here
Stripped bare, and washed clean

The waves kiss and gently caress on the shore
Kissing and winking, and calling for more
The waves like wagging tongues do adore
And whisper there softly to the sand on the shore

You would be nothing without me
I could be nothing
Said the waves to the sand
I could be nothing without you

Each ones shifts and weakens a little
Neither aware just how much they are brittle
Each one shifts and weakens a bit
Allowing the other to live and exist

O water and patience, pressure and time
Cuts through the faces of rocks we have climbed
The army of kisses, the lake never tires
The kisses that can put out all of my fires

You could be nothing without me
I could be nothing
Said the waves to the sand
I could be nothing without you
Without you, I would be nothing
Without me, you could be nothing
Said the waves to the sand
I could be nothing without you

Landslide

I’ve added a little spoken hello intro at the beginning.  You can hear a bit about the harmonium before I sing the song.

Feedback and questions welcome.

Namaste.

Landslide ~ Stevie Nicks, Fleetwood Mac

I took my love and I took it down
I climbed a mountain and I turned around
And I saw my reflection in the snow-covered hills
Well, the landslide brought me down

Oh, mirror in the sky, what is love
Can the child within my heart rise above
Can I sail through the changing ocean tides
Can I handle the seasons of my life

Uh uh, uh uh, uh uh, oh

Well, I’ve been afraid of changin’
‘Cause I’ve built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Children get older
And I’m getting older too
Well
Well, I’ve been afraid of changin’
‘Cause I’ve built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Children get older
And I’m getting older too
Well, I’m getting older too
So take this love and take it down
Yeah, and if you climb a mountain and you turn around
And if you see my reflection in the snow-covered hills
Well, the landslide brought it down
And if you see my reflection in the snow-covered hills
Well maybe, well maybe, well maybe
A landslide will bring you down

Clocks

Thank you, Finnegan, for the request for “Clocks” by Coldplay! I have been hit or miss on feeling well enough to play music lately, but today it felt pretty good.  Also working on recording the piano version, but that takes a touch longer.  Cotton makes another guest appearance.

Check out Finnegan’s page for some of the most brilliant Six Word Stories around.

Hope you enjoy. 🙂

Salvation

I’ve been craving music therapy. And recently, Mr. Modigliani posted a video by Gabrielle Aplin, her song Salvation. It struck me deeply, and being the creative soul I am, my internal voice was screaming to play it on the piano. I asked his permission to give it a go, and he was gracious enough to let me share my version. Thank, you, M…you inspired me.

This is the first time I’ve shared my piano playing with you all, as I’ve been obsessed with harmonium for a while. It is indeed me playing live. And it’s only a small sample of what I can do. I hope to share more over time. It takes much longer to get a proper full recording of a song on piano versus harmonium. But, I’ll try to give you a bit of both now and then.

“Salvation” ~ lyrics

You are the avalanche
One world away
My make believing
While I’m wide awake

Just a trick of light
To bring me back around again
Those wild eyes
A psychedelic silhouette

I never meant to fall for you but I
Was buried underneath and
All that I could see was white
My salvation
My, my
My salvation
My, my

You are the snowstorm
I’m purified
The darkest fairytale
In the dead of night

Let the band play out
As I’m making my way home again
Glorious we transcend
Into a psychedelic silhouette

I never meant to fall for you but I
Was buried underneath and
All that I could see was white
My salvation
My, my
My salvation
My, my
My salvation
My, my
My salvation
My, my

My salvation
My, my
My salvation
My, my
My salvation
My, my
My salvation
My, my”
